Building ecologically with 'bottle bricks' in Uganda

In this project you will volunteer for an NGO in Kayungu District in Uganda. The organisation was founded by local volunteers and focuses on development and combating poverty in the region. Foreign volunteers are most welcome to help!

Project themes include:

  • Water, sanitation and hygiene
  • Environment and nature protection
  • Economic independence for women
  • Orphans and vulnerable young people
  • HIV/AIDS prevention and support

You will join the building of sanitary facilities or water storage. Since 2010, they have been building with bottle bricks, a method in which plastic (water) bottles are filled and used as building blocks. This is a plus for the environment: there is less waste and the bottles are re-used in a sustainable way. The result is a solid construction for a relatively low price

Work

You will work together with local volunteers. You will help collect the bottles at collection points, fill the bottles and build and finish the requested structure. This could be, for example, a toilet block at a school or a water storage facility in a village. You could also be involved in other projects of this organisation.

Accommodation

The project organisation provides food and shelter for the volunteers from abroad.

Leisure

You will work during the week and are free on the weekend. The project organisation can help you organise outings if you wish to go somewhere. The costs for this are covered once you are at the project.

Trip

You arrange the travel to your project yourself. IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably by train or bus. What you at least can do, is compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. You can also compensate your emissions via IBO, by donating to our partner’s tree planting project in Uganda. You can read more about that here.

You travel to Entebbe. You will be picked up and taken to the project site (100 km away).

Try to find a flight that arrives during the day. If you arrive at night, you will have to arrange a hotel stay in Entebbe yourself.

Preparation

IBO offers a good preparation for your volunteering work abroad. You will receive a digital information package and an invitation to a preparation meeting. Read more about the proces from departure until return.

Registration and cost

IBO asks €50 registration fee. You can become an IBO supporter, then you do not pay a registration fee. For this project you pay €540,- in participation fee. This includes your accommodation, meals, transport to and from the airport and the project costs.

Would you like to know more about how your contribution to IBO was calculated and how it is spent? Read about the participation fee.
