To participate in a project at IBO-Nederland we charge a € 50.00 registration fee and a contribution per project: the so called participation fee.
IBO-Nederland aims to make volunteering work at our projects possible for as many people as possible. For this reason we try to keep the participation fee as low as possible.
If you participate in multiple projects in a year, you will only pay the registration fee once.
The registration fee and the participation fee must be transferred to our bankaccount:
NL65RABO0137805233 of Stg. IBO-Nederland (SWIFT/BIC RABONL2U)
Participation Cost
Every now and then people ask why a volunteer would have to pay IBO to do volunteer work abroad. We will explain!
IBO-Nederland connects volunteers and project organisations.
IBO-Nederland is a foundation and we are a non-profit, as are our project organisations. Both IBO and the project organisations make costs on behalf of the volunteers, such as costs for meals, accommodation, project preparation and communication.
To be able to continue our work we must at the very least achieve a net zero financial result, which is the reason we ask a contribution from each of the volunteers: the participation fee.
European Projects
For most projects in Europe IBO-Nederland charges €189.00 participation fee. From the combined contributions, IBO will pay the various project- and preparation costs such as:
- information package about the project for each volunteer
- preparation meetings
- communication with volunteers and the project
- expenditures for food and accommodation during the project
- contribution to (building) materials used in the project
- transportation from the meeting point to the project location
- accessability of IBO during working hours
Some projects are financially stable enough to cover (part of) the cost incurred when receiving volunteers. However, not all projects have that financial capability and they are relying on the assistance of volunteers to make it work. IBO-Nederland aims to prevent that projects with thin financials become more expensive for volunteers to go to. That is the reason why we charge every volunteer in Europe the same amount, irrespective of the project they go to: the price of solidarity.
IBO-Nederland will pay from the financial means at her disposal per project what is needed to cover the accommodation and commitment of volunteers.
EXCEPTIONS
- For projects in Belgium and Germany, our neighbouring countries, IBO-Nederland charges a €89.00 participation fee while for projects in the Netherlands we charge a €0 - €50 fee. IBO wishes to meet her own aims to support projects in need through a sufficient number of volunteers, and by this strategy makes these projects more interesting for volunteers to attend.
- For teen projects (18-) we charge € 50.00 extra. This way we can contribute to the extra cost incurred as a result of involving youth coaches and youth workers.
Worldwide
For projects outside of Europe the participation costs we charge may vary.
With your contribution you cover the cost for your accomodation. In your participation fee, an amount of €140.00 is included for a.o. preparation, communication and information package and general project support (your solidarity price).
IBO-Nederland has decided against charging the lower solidarity price for projects outside Europe. These projects generally last longer and are often customized to fit the requirements of the volunteer. Also, in most cases the project is simply not financially equipped to accept volunteers. Setting up a project is usually much more expensive than the European projects. If we were to price them at the same level as the European ones, the participation fee for everybody would go up and that would make it less attractive for many potential volunteers. We have chosen to avoid that risk.
Other expenses
In order to join a volunteer project, please take into account these expenses as well:
- Travel expenses
- (Travel-) insurance, including clauses covering volunteering
- Vaccination e.g. yellow fever or tetanus (required in some countries)
- Visa (if required in specific countries)
- Health Certificate (for some projects/countries)
- Certificate of Conduct
IBO-Nederland spends funds on
- Preparation and support
From our office in the Netherlands we maintain contact with the projects and our colleagues in the other European IBO’s. We make sure there are clear communication lines with the volunteers. In preparation for the projects, we organise information meetings where volunteers will meet staff members and other (former) volunteers. In case issues arise during your stay abroad, IBO-Nederland can be contacted during working hours.
- Accommodation and meals
In exchange for the work you deliver, some of the projects may provide you with food and shelter. Since many projects are simply not financially strong enough to provide that for free, in those cases IBO will cover those costs from the participation cost.
- Transportation
Most of the time volunteers will be picked up from the nearest train station or airport. This pick-up may be at a charge.
- Materials
Many of the projects involve light construction or maintenance type of activities. In a lot of cases however the project itself cannot cover the cost of materials for volunteers to work with. IBO provides the necessary means in those cases.
- Project support
Under very specific conditions a project can request additional (financial) support from IBO. The supervisory board of IBO-Nederland will decide on such a request.
- Communication and marketing
It is very important that we get in touch with potential volunteers to let them know that we we would like to connect them to projects in Europe and beyond. We do this through adds, social media, printed press, flyers, newsletters, etcetera.
- Office
IBO can be reached at our office in Nijmegen. An experienced staff member will be happy to talk to you and can handle everything with regards to volunteering with IBO.
- Other
There are other expenses incurred in our daily activities such as office material, postage, telephone, internet, expenses for volunteers helping us out, travel expenses when visiting fairs or external meetings.
Donations
The real cost of organising projects for volunteers abroad are much higher than what IBO receives from registration fees or the participation fee charged to volunteers. That is why we are ever so grateful for people who donate money to us from the kindness of their hearts, as they have made it possible for us to do this over the last 60 odd years!

Help IBO to help others!
IBO-Nederland is a non-profit organisation and we do not receive any structural funding.
If you want to join a project at IBO-Nederland we ask for a contribution. We always try to keep this contribution as low as possible. That way we try to keep the threshold for participation low and the numbers of volunteers high.
In order to make sure that participation cost stay low, we need funding from other sources as well. To be able to continue helping the eligible projects, we need donations and financial support from people that support our work and hold our organisation in high regard.
You can also help fund the activities of IBO-Nederland. Be a financial supporter or organise a sponsor event! Brilliant ideas on fundraising? Please let us know!
