Project
After the devastating earthquake of 2015, a temporary health post was quickly established in Fakhel, a small mountain village 25 kilometers from Kathmandu. Now there is a need for a sturdy and lasting building that can serve the community for years to come. This new health center will not only provide a place for medical care, but also a laboratory and a training hall to train local healthcare providers. The construction work will take several years, and this year we are focusing on the construction of the first floor. As a volunteer, you help local craftsmen where necessary, whether it concerns laying bricks, bricklaying, plastering, etc. You work technically according to the needs and progress of the project. In addition to your contribution to the construction, you can also support the local school by organizing activities or teaching, and your help is welcome in the existing medical aid post. This experience promises to be a profound immersion. During your stay in this remote mountain village in the heart of Nepal you can really get to know the culture and beautiful environment of the country from the inside. And of course you can go on a trek to explore the majestic Himalayas, ancient monasteries and countless temples. Let Nepal conquer your heart!
Volunteerwork
As a volunteer, you help local workers with laying the stones, masonry of the walls, installing a ceiling, etc. You can also help at school (organizing activities, teaching) and your help is welcome in the current medical aid post. Either way, it promises to be an intensely immersive experience.
Accommodation
You will spend the first two days in Kathmandu, giving you time to explore this city with all its history and cultural buildings. You then travel further to the project (2 hours' drive in a jeep). The volunteers stay close to the project, in acceptable and safe but austere conditions. Beds are available. Meals are prepared for you by a local chef. Expect an intense immersion during your stay without Western amenities.
Sparetime
You have the opportunity to discover the capital Kathmandu, surrounding places and the beautiful nature and mountains of Nepal. It is possible to make a trip through the Himalayas. At the end of October there is the opportunity to participate in a trekking tour (not included in the price). Another leisure option is visiting the Chitwan National Park (not included in the price).
Journey
You arrange the travel to Kathmandu yourself. There you will be picked up by the projectpartner.
IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably by train or bus. What you at least can do, is compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. You can also compensate your emissions via IBO, by donating to our partner’s tree planting project in Uganda. You can read more about that here.
