The Living Monument initiative was personally launched by the mayor of the city of Gröningen. Together with the German Craft Center Quedlinburg e.V. an old half-timbered house must be saved from decay. The house is located in the middle of the small town of Gröningen in the Westliche Börde and will be further developed into a city district after renovation of the historic building structure. There have already been participation days in which the entire population took part. Workshops are offered to those interested in gaining knowledge about the city's historic buildings. Last year, a construction contract was commissioned here for the first time and this has already achieved a lot. In 2025, the volunteers will work together with experts from the German Craft Center in Quedlinburg, who will, among other things, manage the work camp.
Volunteer work
The volunteers can assist with restoring historic windows and doors, professionally restoring half-timbered houses and learning everything about historic plasterwork. They also examine the entire truss structure. This project also includes acquiring theoretical knowledge about working with historical frameworks and also offers added value for any construction engineering study or background.

You will stay on location with the project partner.
Leisure
In your free time you can explore the town of Gröningen and surrounding places. In addition, there are numerous opportunities for hiking in the surrounding area.
Travel
You arrange your own trip to Gröningen and will be picked up there by the project partner.
You arrange the travel to your project yourself. IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably by train or bus. What you at least can do, is compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. Preparation
IBO offers a good preparation for your volunteering work abroad.You will receive a digital information package and an invitation to a preparation meeting. Read more about the proces from departure until return.
Costs
For this project you pay €50 registration fee and €89 participation fee. If you become an IBO-supporter, you don't have to pay the registration fee.
This includes accommodation and meals, local transport, an information pack and (online) preparation meeting. Excluding travel, insurance and any outings.
