Creative space for an inclusive shared apartment in Leimen

The 'Diakonische Hausgemeinschaften Heidelberg e.V.' have been breaking new ground in inclusion work for 30 years. An inclusive housing project in Leimen also stands for this: Six years ago, the house communities began renovating an empty house in Leimen so that a cross-generational shared living community could be created there. The five residents and many volunteers have transformed the house through their work so that it is habitable again and offers space for many activities. The garden is a popular meeting place for residents of the other housing projects of the house communities, especially in the warmer months, and is barrier-free. This makes the house an important location in the network of the Diakonische Hausgemeinschaften. The volunteers live together with the people with disabilities and will help them implement the project of the new creative space by building a garden shed. The volunteers also gain insight into the innovative and inclusive working methods of the Diaconal House Communities.

Volunteer work

Construction of a foundation, construction of a garden shed, renovation work on the upper floor.

Accommodation

The accommodation is simple (mattress dormitory). A washing machine and WiFi are available. Work clothes, safety shoes, fitted sheets and sleeping bag

Leisure

The 'Bergstrasse in Baden' (Baden mountain road) invites you to take short hikes through the surrounding vineyards with historic castles. But Heidelberg and Mannheim are also just a stone's throw away. In your free time you can explore the towns and surrounding places. In addition, there are numerous opportunities for hiking in the surrounding area with wine yards. Weinheim is a nice town in the northernmost tip of Baden. Long-distance trains stop here, as does the tram connecting Mannheim and Heidelberg.

Travel

Volunteers can easily travel by train to Mannheim and from there take the tram to Leimen (Kulturpfalz-Centrum stop). From there it is a short walk, about 10 minutes, to the project.

You arrange the travel to your project yourself. IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably by train or bus. What you at least can do, is compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. You can also compensate your emissions via IBO, by donating to our partner’s tree planting project in Uganda. You can read more about that here.

Preparation

IBO offers a good preparation for your volunteering work abroad. You will receive a digital information package and an invitation to a preparation meeting. Read more about the proces from departure until return.

Costs

For this project you pay €50 registration fee and €89 participation fee. If you become an IBO-supporter, you don't have to pay the registration fee.
