Project
You will visit a Dutch-Romanian foundation and will set up activities for the local Roma children. This goal of this organisation is to coach young people that have come from a children's home and help them with their integration in Romanian society. Without this kind of support these young people could easily end up in crime and/or prostitution. To give them a different perspective, they are taught skills and receive guidance on their way to a job and independant living space.
The organization is located on the site of a former state farm. The young people live here and work, under supervision, at their own campsite and petting zoo. The young people gain work experience, they receive wages and pay rent and groceries. The costs of this integration process are paid with income from donations, the campsite in Romania and a thrift shop in the Netherlands.
If you register for this project, we ask you to write a message to the project in which you indicate which activities you would like to organize and what you enjoy doing. This could be anything!
Activities
As a volunteer you will mainly do social activities with the children from the area. As soon as the organization has completed its move, there will also be room for necessary jobs and refurbishing the new site and the apartments where the young people stay. For example, consider:
- Painting, tiling, carpentry, laying laminate, etc.
- Possibly installing electricity (only if you have experience with this!)
- Gardening work
- Carrying out repairs on the petting zoo or on buildings
- Setting out walking and cycling tours
- Repairing bicycles
- Or something else
During this project you will organize afternoon activities for the Roma children in the neighbourhood. This promotes the relationship between project and neighborhood and you give children who grow up in great poverty a great afternoon. Please note: there are additional costs for lunch for the children and possibly. game material. You can raise funds for this before you leave!
Residence
You stay on the premises of the organization. Your place to sleep depends on what is available and can vary from a (luxury) apartment to a (ready) tent at the campsite. In all cases, a bed with bed linen is provided. So you don't have to bring that yourself.
You prepare the meals with your group. You do your shopping in consultation with the project manager. A car can be borrowed for shopping. It is also possible to have lunch (which is the main meal of the day) delivered.
Travel
You travel independently to Romania. After registration you will receive more information and travel advice.
IBO asks all its volunteers to travel as sustainably as possible, preferably by train or bus. Traveling by plane is very damaging to the environment. You might decide to fly to this project. In this case you can compensate your CO2 emissions through a recognized organization. For more information, visit the website of Milieu Centraal.
Preparation
IBO offers a good preparation for your volunteering work abroad. You will receive a digital information package and an invitation to a preparation meeting. Read more about the proces from departure until return.
