The project
The Barac Initiative aims to renovate and transform two former barracks buildings in Mannheim. Barac combines an artist's studio, exhibition spaces, and a social housing concept. Even the courtyard offers plenty of art to discover, a theme that continues throughout the building. Artists live and work here, and there's a large space for dance and events, as well as a shared living space for people with disabilities. The spacious kitchen is a lively meeting place for residents. Whether it's the Wednesday market, the numerous events, or the open gatherings, everyone is welcome! With a strong community and mutual support, many visions and projects, both large and small, become reality at Barac.
Volunteer work
The volunteers will carry out renovation work in and around the building, primarily using wood and concrete. All work will be supervised by the project partner.
Accommodation
You will stay on location with the project partner.
Leisure
Barac isn't the only place with a vibrant cultural life; Mannheim offers countless leisure activities, from exhibitions and concerts to theater performances. Excursions to the surrounding area, such as the Neckar or the Rhine, are highly recommended. Heidelberg and Ludwigshafen are also easily accessible from Mannheim for day trips.
Travel
You arrange your own trip to Mannheim and will be picked up there by the project partner.
IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably with public transport. Sometimes travelling by plane is inevitable. We kindly suggest to compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. You can also compensate your emissions through IBO, by donating to our partner’s tree planting project in Uganda. You can read more about that here.
Preparation
IBO offers a good preparation for your volunteering work abroad. You will receive a digital information package and an invitation to a preparation meeting. Read more about the proces from departure until return.
