Convert a monumental trainstation into a cultural centre for music and dance in Leisnig

The project

In Leisnig, the historic train station is undergoing a complete renovation and expansion. This will allow the station to remain in use not only year-round but also for concerts, workshops, and open-air events in the summer. The renovation began at the end of 2021: the building's structure will be examined, original elements will be meticulously preserved, and the station spaces will be redesigned and expanded. Leisnig Station is a vibrant place that is constantly evolving, along with the people who work, perform, and participate there. The three founders envision a cultural center at the train station, where music connects people and attracts them from far and wide. In addition to concerts, dance and music workshops, and music lessons, the station also organizes an annual station orchestra and jam sessions. The cultural center is open to a wide range of events and aims to foster a love of music.

Volunteer work

The volunteers are carrying out various tasks related to the interior renovation. The direct train connection to Leipzig is conveniently located, and Chemnitz and Dresden are also easily accessible with a transfer. The surrounding area is ideal for exploring via cycling and walking paths, and Leipzig boasts a charming little town center.

Accommodation

You will stay with the project partner in a dormitory.

Leisure

The Kulturbahnhof has a good network, for example with the universities in Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz. In addition to the cultural activities, there is a café and a beer garden, which is used for many events, especially in the summer. The area is ideal for walking and cycling. The train to Leipzig leaves right on the doorstep, but Leisnig itself also has a nice city center. Even closer is the extensive cultural program with dance and culture, which is offered all year round at the Kulturbahnhof.

Travel

You arrange your own trip to the station in Leisnig and will be picked up there by the project partner.

IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably with public transport. Sometimes travelling by plane is inevitable. We kindly suggest to compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. You can also compensate your emissions through IBO, by donating to our partner’s tree planting project in Uganda. You can read more about that here.
