The grounds of the “Begegnungsbahnhof Hasel” association are a place to encounter, as the name says, and are located at the end of a disused station tunnel and are therefore pleasantly cool, especially in summer. There have been no trains to Hasel since 1971, but volunteers from IBO come every year. This year, work on an extension is to be pushed forward. According to the house-within-a-house principle, the listed building will be given a new interior structure, so that another cozy group room, an additional toilet and a supervisor's room for overnight stays will be created in the old station building. The foundation was laid last year at the 2024 project and the timber frame structure will be built in the spring. Now help is needed for the interior work! Wood and insulation work in particular are to be done. A wall breakthrough to the goods hall and concreting the new retaining wall are other exciting tasks. A seating area outside is also to be completed, which was built last year.
Volunteer work
The volunteer work will consist of interior work, wood and insulation work, wall breakthrough and concreting. All construction work will be supervised by professionals.
Accommodation
The volunteers live in the old train station in various shared rooms and anyone who wants can sleep outside in a tent. The volunteers help prepare all meals. A washing machine and WiFi are available. Volunteers are asked to bring a sleeping bag, mattress sheet (if you prefer camping you need a sleeping mat), work clothes and safety shoes.
Leisure
Hasel is located in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland and offers numerous excursion options - for example to nearby Basel or Freiburg. Or you can simply enjoy the Black Forest idyll. You can arrange cave visits, swimming in the Rhine or in a swimming pool, play games and attent singing evenings.
Travel
You will arrange your travel to Schopfheim station. You will be picked up by the projectpartner on a day/time that is still to be determined.
You arrange the travel to your project yourself. IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably by train or bus. What you at least can do, is compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. You can also compensate your emissions via IBO, by donating to our partner’s tree planting project in Uganda. You can read more about that here.
Preparation
IBO offers a good preparation for your volunteering work abroad. You will receive a digital information package and an invitation to a preparation meeting. Read more about the proces from departure until return.
Costs
For this project you pay €50 registration fee and €89 participation fee. If you become an IBO-supporter, you don't have to pay the registration fee.
