Contribute to sustainable community development in Kamuli

Project

Contribute in a meaningful way to sustainable community development in Uganda! In the region around Kamuli, the NGO 'Becky's Child Foundation' supports the local community through care initiatives, meeting basic needs, and sustainable projects, particularly for the elderly and children. 'Becky's Child Foundation' was founded by Rebecca, a young Ugandan woman currently studying and living in the Netherlands. Her vision is rooted in compassion and driven by the desire to support children and the elderly in Uganda with dignity, love, and sustainable support. In addition to care, the team regularly organizes outreach missions in nearby communities, delivering essential goods such as clothing, food, and basic medical care. You will work alongside the local team of staff and volunteers, learn valuable skills, and be truly immersed in authentic Ugandan culture. This project is available year-round for 1 month or longer.

Work

You will be working in a local team dedicated to community development through meaningful and sustainable projects. You will indirectly support vulnerable children and the elderly in the community. All work is supervised, and volunteers are expected to be adaptable, show respect for the local culture, be reliable, and be able to work well in a team with local staff. No specific qualifications are required – a positive attitude and commitment to the community are most important. The program for your project will be tailored to the duration of your stay and your skills. As a volunteer, you can contribute in the following areas:

  • Assisting with elderly care and disability care programs through home visits
  • Supporting community development, agriculture, livestock farming, and sustainability projects
  • Helping with logistical tasks and distributing food to the wider community
  • Contributing to administrative tasks, fundraising support, and initiatives to strengthen knowledge and skills within the community (capacity training)
  • Participating in health education programs and supporting free medical camps
  • Helping to set up a vocational training center for children with physical and/or mental disabilities to increase their participation in society.

Accommodation

Volunteers will be accommodated in a hotel or guesthouse near the project location. All basic amenities will be available there. Meals can be provided fully or partially at the project location, in consultation. Please let us know if there are any special dietary requirements.

Leisure

In the evenings and on weekends, you are free to discover the surrounding area and visit nearby cities or explore nature. The project partner can advise you on which nearby attractions are worth visiting. The River Nile originates in nearby Jinja, situated on Lake Victoria, where you can visit beautiful waterfalls, go rafting, kayaking, and participate in various excursions. It is a fishing village that has grown into a popular tourist destination.

Travel

The nearest airport is Entebbe, where you will be picked up by the project partner.

You will fly to this project. Air travel is environmentally damaging. One thing you can do is offset your CO2 emissions through a recognized organization or through IBO. IBO collaborates with our partner organization in Uganda for their tree-planting project, allowing IBO volunteers to offset their emissions by contributing to this project. Read more here. For more general information about CO2 offsets, visit the Milieu Centraal website.
