Founded in 2016, the non-profit "Bürgerstiftung Meißen" foundation aims to facilitate and support civic engagement, strengthen a sense of community, social cohesion and equal opportunities. The organisation seeks to reactivate the "Jahnhalle", which was built in 1895 in the Art Nouveau style and is now a listed building, as a publicly accessible space for playing, exercising, doing sport and socialising.
Volunteer work
The outdoor area is to be equipped with a football pitch and fitness equipment. An intergenerational and inclusive indoor playground will be created in the hall. A café is also planned, as well as shared office space for clubs and self-employed people and multifunctional rooms for hire. During the construction camp, the historic building will be further renovated and construction of the multi-sports facility on the outdoor area will begin. The work will include woodwork, insulation work, drywall work and demolition work under professional guidance.
Accommodation
Volunteers will stay in an appartment with several rooms, about 10 minutes to walk from the construction site. Vegetarian meals are possible in consultation. Participants are asked to bring their own bed linen, comfortable working clothes and preferably also safety shoes (with steel noses).
Leisure
Meißen is a municipality close to Dresden in the German county of Saxony. You can explore the city and visit the beautiful cathedral, go canoing, go hiking in the surrounding nature, visit the cinema, enjoy the local campfire or book an excursion to Dresden.
Travel
The volunteers will be picked up at Meißen Altstadt station. Contact information will be shared after application.
You arrange the travel to your project yourself. IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably by train or bus. What you at least can do, is compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. You can also compensate your emissions via IBO, by donating to our partner’s tree planting project in Uganda. You can read more about that here.
Preparation
IBO offers a good preparation for your volunteering work abroad. You will receive a digital information package and an invitation to a preparation meeting. Read more about the proces from departure until return.
