The high school Spermalie is a school for 'extraordinary education'. Youngsters with autism, youngsters with visual limitations, deaf or hearing impaired youngsters and youngsters with multiple handicaps go to school here. There are two more educational institutions at the same terrain, but the buildings and classrooms of these are often not easily accessible for students with a handicap. Together with international volunteers and young refugees staying in Belgium, you will help to maintain the school.
Volunteer work
You will work on all kinds of technical jobs, repairs and painting, so that the school will be fresh and better accessible for the students after the summer break. The garden also needs attention: you can think about cutting, weeding and digging.
Accommodation
You will stay will all volunteers at the terrain of the school and will have your own room, possible shared with another volunteers. Beds and bedsheets are available, so you do not have to bring them yourself. All meals are provided.
Leisure
Bruges is a beautiful, medieval city with nice terraces and cafes, which you can explore. With public transport the coast of Belgium is easily accessible for a weekend trip to the beach. Other cities, such as Brussels and Ghent, are also accessible.
Travel
The volunteers will be picked up at a fixed time, to be decided, at the train station in Bruges.
You arrange the travel to your project yourself. IBO asks all volunteers to travel in the most sustainable way possible, so preferably by train or bus. What you at least can do, is compensate your CO2 emissions. You can find more information about this on the website of Milieu Centraal. You can also compensate your emissions via IBO, by donating to our partner’s tree planting project in Uganda. You can read more about that here.
Preparation
IBO offers a good preparation for your volunteering work abroad. You will receive a digital information package and an invitation to a preparation meeting. Read more about the proces from departure until return.
